Hornby: LMS 0–6–0 4F Class – LMS Unlined
The 4F locomotives were based on Sir Henry Fowler’s Midland Railway 3835 design, which was introduced in 1911. Over the next 30 years or more the construction of these locomotives continued with little or no differences although The LMS constructed variants were left hand driven. By the time the last of the Class had been completed in 1941 some 772 had been built in total.
The LMS Fowler 4F locomotives were originally designed as freight locomotives but were quite often used for passenger workings. The vast majority of the Class was used mainly on the London Midland tracks although many found their way onto all other Regions. Withdrawal of the Class commenced in 1959 and continued through to 1966 with three being preserved.

Hornby is a household name and is famous as the UK brand leader in the model railway hobby. The company’s founder was Frank Hornby (1863 – 1936) who applied for a patent in 1901 to protect an invention he called ‘Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People’. Nobody then could have imagined how this product would influence the model railway hobby that we know today.
