Description

It was the wildest election in history and now it has been captured in a book by Southern California columnist Susan Shelley. During the 2016 presidential campaign, as so many East Coast columnists and pundits got it wrong week after week, one conservative columnist in liberal Los Angeles saw what was happening and let her readers in on it: Donald Trump was doing Harry Houdini's Metamorphosis trick--the candidate tied to wealth, privilege, the Iraq war and Wall Street was no longer the Republican, but the Democrat. Hillary Clinton's secrecy problem was a pattern that had been repeated so many times, it could be sold as wallpaper. The Bernie Sanders campaign was a page right out of Upton Sinclair's "End Poverty in California" campaign for governor in the 1930s, and the election results in the 2016 primaries were like a biopsy that came back positive for Great Depression. It's all chronicled in "How Trump Won: Columns by Susan Shelley on a Remarkable Year and Change" the debates, the women, the Russians, the emails--from "The Angry American Voter" to the rowdy history of the Electoral College, Susan Shelley's columns for the Southern California News Group kept readers entertained and informed through an election campaign that ended in the greatest disruption of the status quo since the American Civil War. We'll never see anything like it again. Captured in this collection are the moments that captured the story.

Author Biography:

Susan Shelley is one of the leading conservative columnists in California and a member of the editorial board of the Southern California News Group, eleven daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Daily News and the Orange County Register. She was previously a candidate for the California Assembly, startling the political establishment by nearly winning a longshot special election after campaigning on economically conservative ideas in a liberal district. Susan is the author of "How the First Amendment Came to Protect Topless Dancing," a history of landmark Supreme Court decisions that changed the Constitution and the country.
