Indigenous knowledge derives from understanding relationships among species, which makes it effective in discussing natural phenomena such as climate change. This book explores indigenous knowledge as science, establishing the relationship between ecology, evolution and traditional ecological knowledge. Pierotti takes an innovative and unusual approach in the debate over evolution by looking at the contrasting European and indigenous views of subjects such as relatedness and creation, and examining how these are important in understanding the relationship of humans to the natural world.

Raymond Pierotti is Associate Professor, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Global Indigenous Nations Studies at the University of Kansas.
