Description

Laid back beat poets at a North Beach cafe, an operatic diva basking in adulation at curtain call, a sombre urban redevelopment opposition meeting, a shirtless old man at the ready in a boxer's stance - Nowinski's masterful eye has been capturing the iconic figures of San Francisco for more than three decades. "Ira Nowinski's San Francisco" magically brings to life three of the different faces of this fascinating city - the vibrant beat poet scene of North Beach, the defiant tenants of South of Market's bygone residential hotels, and the electrifying energy both onstage and backstage at the San Francisco Opera. Poems, anecdotes, and personal accounts from the poets, divas, and activists provide an even deeper insight into the lives of the people Nowinski has photographed, and into the heart of the city itself.
