The 1919 Treaty of Versailles severely limited German naval construction, but not of small craft. Germany built the Schnellboot to give its navy a fighting chance above the waves. These wood and aluminum built vessels were equipped with incredibly powerful engines for high speed maneuvers and a withering array of armaments for combating transport, cargo, and light warships. The physical and psychological effect of the S-100 whipping in at 50mph under cover of darkness and shredding superstructures with 20mm fire while firing salvos of torpedoes was staggering.
