This story is a close second favourite of mine from one of the Bronte sisters. The tragically depressing history of Jane draws you to her as a character. Mr Rochester is a charming character, witty and mysterious. In my opinion, so far, movie and screen adaptations have failed to really portray these characters as they are portrayed in the book. I have enjoyed the book far more than any of the movie/tv versions I've seen. My heart beat like crazy as I read through the heartbreaking scene following the attempt to marry, after Mr Rochester's secret was finally revealed. There is an intensity in this scene that so far has not been translated to film. A fantastic read for fans of classic romantic fiction. Romance with a bit of a gothic feel.

Description

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. 'I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.' Bronte's infamous Gothic novel tells the story of orphan Jane, a child of unfortunate circumstances. Raised and treated badly by her aunt and cousins and eventually sent away to a cruel boarding school, it is not until Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield that she finds happiness. Meek, measured, but determined, Jane soon falls in love with her brooding and stormy master, Mr Rochester, but it is not long before strange and unnerving events occur in the house and Jane is forced to leave Thornfield to pursue her future.

Author Biography:

Charlotte was the eldest of the Bronte sisters. On the back of the enormous success of JANE EYRE Bronte was persuaded by her publisher to reveal her true identity. She would visit London occasionally and began to move in a more exalted social circle, becoming friends with Harriet Martineau, Elizabeth Gaskell, William Makepeace Thackeray and G. H. Lewes. Her book had sparked a movement in regards to feminism in literature and today is still much-loved and lauded.
