"Very solid and enjoyable, original better though"

Title about sums it up, an enjoyable game to play, and based off my favorite board game King of Tokyo, King of New York expands the complexity a little bit and adds some new and different mechanics including buildings and the military (buildings give you points or resources for destroying, but doing so brings military units who can deal damage to you). Enjoyable, and a nice change of pace if you've played some King of Tokyo and want a change, but I think the original is better, and the extra fiddlyness of the building/military tokens can be somewhat annoying

"Addictive. Adapted. Amazing."

I bought this game with fear it will be a lame spinoff from KoT. Thankfully I was wrong. While the core mechanics remain the same as KoT, KoNY has so many improvements and additions that it was addictive to stop playing. I bought this to a GAMES night along with several other games such as Pandemic & Catan, however we only ever played Kings of New York… For 5 hours! There are three new dice faces, one of which involves a new game mechanic of destroying buildings for energy, lives and Victory Points, though the flipped tiles can fight back and cause you to lose lives! It is an intriguing game with a board twice the size of the King of Tokyo board, and there are also some fantastic new cards to enhance gameplay with scary consequences, like the “Natural Selection (an extra dice – but if you roll a Star you die!)” and the “Superstar” ‘goal card’ which rewards you with Victory points the more stars you roll (Natural Selection and Superstar do not make a good combo!). Manhattan is split in to three tiers, which you advance through the longer you stay in New York, rewarding you more energy and Victory Points, however you are the target of the other four districts; Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. King of New York is the new and improved Tokyo, that is a little more in depth which makes it a little harder to teach, however the whole group picked it up by the end of the first game and was asking “just one more game” for the entire day. A fantastic board game that everyone will enjoy!

Description

There's always something happening in the city that never sleeps. Maybe it's the lights, maybe it's the energy, or maybe it's the giant monsters trying to demolish the place!

King of New York is a standalone game from designer Richard Garfield that keeps the core ideas of King of Tokyo while introducing new ways to play. As in King of Tokyo, your goal is to be the first monster to collect 20 victory points (VPs) or to be the last monster standing. On your turn, you roll six dice up to three times, then carry out the actions on those dice. Claws cause damage to other monsters, hearts heal damage to yourself, and energy is stored up so that you can purchase power cards that provide unique effects not available to anyone else.

What's new in King of New York is that you can now try to become a star in the big city; more specifically, you can achieve “Fame”, which nets you VPs, but superstar status is fleeting, so enjoy your time in the spotlight.

The game board for King of New York is larger than in King of Tokyo with each monster occupying a district in the city and everyone trying to shine in Manhattan. When you attack, you can displace a monster in another district, whether to escape military forces or to find new smashing opportunities. Yes, smashing because you can now destroy buildings and get bonuses for doing so, but the more destruction you cause, the more intense the military response.

The monsters from King of New York can be used in King of Tokyo and vice versa, but the power cards are specific to this game.
