Description

This second volume of over 200 images of Lockleaze has been compiled using pictures from the archives of the local schools, ex-pupils photographs and former Lockleaze resident's personal collections. The illustrations in this book are drawn from a fund of largely unpublished archive material providing a photographic record of the areas post-war origins to the late 1990s. Also included are photographs that document the transformation of the area from predominately rural arable and pastureland, with two isolated farmhouses, into a municipal housing estate and thriving community. Including brief histories of some of the organisations that had a significant influence on the residents of the estate during its formative years, this book features the Shaftesbury Crusade's move to Lockleaze in 1948, which provided the facility to enable the formation of a local Boys' Brigade Company, as well as other youth organizations, and also provided a permanent home for Dings Crusaders Rugby Club, still at the heart of the local community.
