"A beautiful landscape of unrelenting frustration"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Lost Planet 2, is the sequel to the original 3rd person, run, grapple, shoot, kill huge monsters with glowing bits. All these elements stay the same, however Capcom has changed quite a bit along the way as far as game play. The biggest change is, you have to play in a co-op game. Either with AI units, or with 3 other people on XBox Live. If you don't have Live, you're in for a whole bunch of pain and suffering.

Each Episode is split up by smaller missions, and you have a limited number of lives per Episode. Each Episode usually ends with a huge boss battle, which is pretty fun, however rather frustrating after playing for 1 hour and dying your last death, and having to start from square 1 for that episode. You can not continue from the chapter / mission breaks in an episode, you have to do the whole thing from the start. This becomes a problem pretty early on in “single” player mode, because the AI are well, just about as dumb as AI can be, and have a tendency to die when they hit the big monsters pretty quickly.

The ‘Single’ player or Campaign mode, has virtually no story. It's going from post to post with some cut scenes about some threat of some sort, that really makes no sense. The first game at least had a protagonist that you played through trying to find his lost memories or some generic plot, but LP2 just threw that out the window. To play a Single player game, you still have to create a custom multiplayer match, and choose ‘offline’. There literally is no ‘Start 1p game’ button, which I found pretty pathetic menu wise.

Online, you have your standard Xbox live drop out issues, which are great when you select a custom match, ‘Episode 2, Chapter 3’ or whatever, and if you don't get in, or you're dropped out, you have to set all your pre-requisites again, they're not remembered. It's a small gripe, but it is annoying after about 10 times re-entering your settings every time you swap menus, join a game that is full, etc. Online player ranking is a bit of a joke too when playing multiplayer non-campaign. (Death Match, capture the flag, etc). I was at player rank 1 my first time through, playing against people at level 80. I would assume a ‘rank’ would match me against players within a few levels of me, but nay, so unless you're a master of LP2 / 3rd person shooting, be prepared to feel some hurt on multiplayer.

Ok, so I have a lot of gripes, and a lot more. Especially when you get to the train level and fall off and die, and then run out of lives to kill the boss BUT! I'll save that for you to discover. However, I did rate the game a 4/5. I am a sucker for punishment, I like the huge scale of the boss battles, and even though you'll die multiple times, have to start from the beginning and do it again, there is some enjoyment from killing a 20 story tall glowing gecko. The graphics / sound are probably the best out right now, the controls well, they are sludgy, if you're used to fast FPS games. It's a bit slower than even popular 3rd person games such as Gears of War. You will inevitably break a controller throwing it at a wall now and then, but in the end the rewards are pretty good if you stick with it, and have a group of friends to help you tackle the bosses.

"Worth $20"

Most of you guys are complaining about it but I thought it was a brilliant game worth more than this sites awesome deal is providing. I will admit that I wouldn't have bought this game if I didn't have Xbox Live because the story isn't its strong point. Co-op is wheres it's at. It is the most fun you will have with your friends until Gears of War 3 comes out, Which I am buying on Mighty Ape

"Back to the basics fun"

After playing the demo on xbox live and playing the first Lost planet I was a little apprehensive about buying this game. One of my gamer friends told me to get it and you wont regret it.

So I buckled to the pressure and I am pleased to say it is fun but bloody frustrating at times. If you are going to play this on your own be prepared for some very frustrating moments. The frustration is not so bad in co-op.

There are some truly epic battles here especially on the harder difficulties where you can battle for an hour on one boss! The enemies are drop dead gorgeous and some of the movement of them is outstanding. There is also a nice variety of levels to play through but they are linear and sometimes the objectives are not always clear. The story is nothing to write home about but just blowing things to pieces is enough to keep you ticking along.

The levelling up is huge and the “slot machine” weapon upgrades mechanic adds real depth to the game. The slot machine is random so it can be a pain in the butt at times too! If you are into Achievement collecting you will be here for ages!

My advice is if you are on the fence on whether or not to buy this game rent it first. That's what I did and I ended up buying it.

"Old school excellence"

Purchased on Mighty Ape

This game is fantastic. I think it's a gem that modern reviewers just don't understand. Now days unless a game is a FPS, plays like a movie or is over the top violent, reviewers shun it. They don't appreciate a good boss battle style games. This game feels like Super Contra and has just about the same amount of story and thats just the way I like it. Best played online or with a friend.

"Not bad for $20"

I bought this game on special for $20. It was interesting, and action packed. The difficulty was quite high, and the AI teammates were shockingly stupid. The weapons were fun but lacked any real variety, especially for a futuristic sci-fi game. Didn't play multiplayer, but imagine it is just the usual CTF and DM.

"Very cool co-op game"

A very unique style of game play, great for co-op, can tend to be hard to get into but once the controls are figured out a great game to waste endless hours on.

"Good, not great"

I picked this game up because it was 30 bucks. Its is worth 50. singleplayer and multiplayer are good, but nothing to get up early in the morning for.

The gameplay is fairly good, co-op is very good however it can get a bit repetive. Boss battles are fun and big but it is just shooting at the same glowing spots:(

Lost Planet 2 is fustrating at times (I.E the lack of save points) but generally (graphically, gameplay sound and storyline) good.

"A lot of game for your buck." Purchased on Mighty Ape

People have complanied about how trying this game is, has the whole world gone soft? there is a ton of gameplay packed into this game. This game is designed by the company that invented tight, twitch gameplay, dont be a cry baby if you die a few times to many, grab an online partner and get some team playing going on and then you will see this game shine. Even if you are an acheivement whore, chances are you will cave well before the estimated 500 hours worth of gameplay.

"still playing it" Purchased on Mighty Ape

this game is a good multiplayer game but only with friends you know. Although the game is multiplayer based the system is not very friendly when trying to set up games as there's no ‘drop-in’ (players can't join in the middle of a game) and you have to click accept three times everytime you try to join a game.

for $25 though i got my money's worth out of this game, we've finished it multiple times and are still trying to unlock the occasional item.

The game can be frusturating at times, particularly when enemies keep bashing you before you can recover, being stunted when shot so you can't shot back or run until your person has finished flinching, and falling short of a zipline because your legs got caught on something as you flew over it. The game is not without flaws.

However if the game was not frusturating i would not play it. To avoid this issues you need teamwork and planning as they are not glitches but part of the games rules.

I've been playing this recently, bought it quite cheap on Mightyape, very happy with the purchase. I'm more of a FPS gamer so won't go into much detail at the moment about this game, all I say is its really nice and something different in the 3PS style genre, to play.

"NO! NO! NO!"
1 stars"

Sadly, there is no rating lower than 1 star, but if there was, LOST PLANET 2 WOULD GET IT!. Awful gameplay, you'll never know what your meant to be doing, all your A.I team mates die, leaving you alone with no directions or objective markers.

So what do you do? You get into a MECH, Good Idea? NO. It looks awesome but when your character gets inside you have to wait for the 35 second long start up sequence, by which time your already dead. It like this with Every ordnance machine in the game.

Impossible bosses, awful game configuration and terrible A.I construction will leave you clueless, confused and wanting your money back. DO NOT BUY!
