A slow moving but intriguing movie starring Tsai Chin (The world of Suzie Wong, Joy Luck club, a Bond movie) who is as always excellent & very much carries the movie.

Description

In the heart of Chinatown, an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old grandma (Tsai Chin) is eager to live life as an independent woman, despite the worry of her family. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma decides to head to the casino and goes all in, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck… suddenly attracting the attention of some local gangsters. Desperate to protect herself, Grandma employs the services of a bodyguard (Corey Ha) from a rival gang and soon finds herself right in the middle of a Chinatown gang war. Director Sasie Sealy brings to life a dark comedy about immigrant life, the vulnerabilities of aging and an unexpected friendship. Set in alleyways and underground mahjong parlours with a cast of richly drawn characters, Lucky Grandma is a love letter to Chinatown and an homage to all the badass elderly women who inhabit it.

Critic reviews of Lucky Grandma

“…delightful…picaresque dark comedy…gorgeous without being too glossy, almost like a silent film with minimal dialogue, mostly relying on non-verbal cues and music.”
Pauline Adamek – FILMINK (Australia)

""Lucky Grandma" is a wickedly entertaining dark comedy, steeped in the colors and characters of New York City's Chinatown."
Jude Dry – IndieWire

“Wild sass, gentle comedy, shivs of poignancy, and instantly vivid characters add up to a wonderful riff on mob movies as a Chinatown granny faces off against gangsters. Tsai Chin is an absolute hoot.”
MaryAnn Johanson – Flick Filosopher
