Excerpt from Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories, and Orders: 1947 1963 Revised; Formerly Industry Survey In March 1957, the responsibility for collection and tabulation of the monthly Industry Survey was trans ferred to the Bureau of the Census, the Department's principal unit for large statistical projects of primary data collection, with the understanding that this agency would replace the existing survey with one based on a much larger sample and develop a new series which would meet other expressed needs of data users. The Bureau of the Census has now reached a stage in its comprehensive revision of the monthly Indus try Survey ou Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories, and Orders, where the new series can be introduced. While a number of changes, primarily in the collection and processing phases of the program, had already been incorporated in the old series, certain major features of the revision are presented for the first time in the new series. The major changes in the series in recent years, including the present revisions, are summarized below and are treated in more detail in the following chapters.
