Description

Excerpt from Memorials of the Rev. Edmund Kell and Mrs. Kell, of Southampton Latin and English composition, for at sixteen he was the author of a number of poems, and translations which show marked ability, while some of his own compositions are distinguished by great sweetness and power. He cherished an intense love of his mother, and is often found writing in verse his admiration of and gratitude to her. No one who knew him as a man could otherwise think of him than one who would pay attention to all the little kindnesses which make up the sum of domestic peace. In hours of trial and bereavement, which in common with others their home was destined to experience, his lines breathed hope and trust, and many expressions which manifest, in a very beautiful way, a desire to please God. At the age of sixteen he went to college at Glasgow, where he remained four years, and graduated m.a., taking a high standing in classics. In the papers of that day we frequently find his name in the prize list of students of both First and Second Divisions.
