Description

A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 20-23 weeks. The main sign of a miscarriage is vaginal bleeding, which may be followed by cramping and pain in your lower abdomen. It is advised to see a doctor or midwife soon as bleeding is noticed. It doesn't necessarily mean you are having a miscarriage because of bleeding but it is important to see your doctor. However, bear in mind that light vaginal bleeding is relatively common during the first trimester (first 3 months) of pregnancy and doesn't necessarily mean you are having a miscarriage. There also many uncertainties of miscarriages and not all of them are individually controlled or managed. Thus you can self-blame or blame your partner. In the past decade, the World Health Organization has estimated the regional and global occurrence of miscarriages. In the year 2000, 19 million miscarriages took place Worldwide. In the United Kingdom, an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage (1 in 5 if we only count women who realised or reported the miscarriage). Around 11 in 1,000 pregnancies are ectopic. About 1 in 100 women in the UK experience recurrent miscarriages (three or more in a row).More than 6 in 10 of women who have a recurrent miscarriage go on to have a successful pregnancy. In developing countries like Latin America and the Caribbean, it is estimated that 3.7 million miscarriages take place each year. The miscarriage rates at these countries are 26 per 1000 women. Each year in Africa, 4.2 million miscarriages are estimated to take place. The ratio of miscarriage rates is 22 per 1,000 women. This estimates to one miscarriage per seven live births. Although research found that the fathers' sadness and grief were largely dismissed by others they need counselling to in order to have a successful change of trying again with self-belief and confidence due to the loss experience. Miscarriages, if not supported well, have lead couples to separate or divorce in relationships due to blaming one and another unfortunately. This book will add insight, knowledge and ways on how to deal with a miscarriage and how to cope with it as well as add to knowledge in the field of Obstetrics and gynecology.
