Excerpt from Moliere's Les Fourberies De Scapin: With Introduction, Appendix, Notes, and Vocabulary Moliere's services as a royal entertainer were highly valued by Louis XIV; of his last eight plays, all but two were written to order for the court. In January, 1671, the king com mandad a spectacular entertainment for the Tuileries palace; in collaboration with Corneille and others, Moliere produced the tragedie - ballet Psyche. The difficulty of adapting the elaborate scenery to the smaller stage of the palais-royal postponed the public production until July; and in order to provide for his company a new attraction which should con trast with the spectacular Psyche, he wrote 163 F ourberies dc Scapin, first performed with is Sicilian on May 24. Eighteen performances were given within eight weeks. Les Femmes Savantes, also, was written for the palais-royal in 1672. Moliere died on the evening of Feb. 17, 1673, after taking part in the fourth performance of lo M alade imaginaire.
