'I tell you Johnny, I'd never have believed that money could bring you unhappiness. But now, I'm starting to think it really might be true.' The Harper family has been torn apart since being deprived of their former material wealth. When they win the lottery, however, it looks like all of their troubles are over. But there is just one problem: a twist of fate means they will receive just half the jackpot. A combination of nagging thoughts of what they have lost, alcohol abuse and a marriage already fractured by months of argument means that the lottery win, somehow, only threatens to drive the Harpers even further apart. And they are not the only ones who are affected. When two other families desperate for money also become sucked into the chain of events - a chain of events that might not be quite as random as it appears - a web of deceit, conflict and death is soon created. Some say that money is the root of all evil. This ill-fated trio of families, though, must quickly come to realise that things are getting much more serious for them even than that.
