"May not be liked by DIEHARD Monster hunter fans,BUT!!"
5 stars"

What would happen if Monster hunter met Jurassic park and then slammed into a Pokemon game-,the answer is this game!!. Having played the extensive demo for over 3 days,we are impressed by its art style, character developement amd the fact that unlike MH Generations,THIS ONE HAS A STORY!,and a good one to boot!.
It's Due to the nature of the art and the different style that this version of MH uses that MAY be a problem to real diehard MH fans, yet we are and found the game extremely satisfying in the world presented for you to roam around in as you strive to improve your Kinship with your monsters,( of which you can have 5 at one time, and store 200 in the stables as well as 12 eggs),fighting a rock, paper, scissors type battling system against enemies. Though the battle system is simplified to some extent,it is still challenging ,and can be difficult at times. Requires team work, good Kinship with your monsters and knowing the enemy monsters weakness and exploiting them (the pokemon element in this game). All the potion making, crafting and weapon and armor enhancement that is used in previous MH games is present here also, except the barbecue where you roast meat, instead this time you make meat recipes for your monsters which AIDS their levelling up. The world itself is huge and cut scences in 3D are mind blowing, along the lines of the quality of Zelda,Ocarina of time,in the sense of the cheerful colour palettes used, and the way the scences are structured. So far we have found little to gripe about except the usual MH annoyances, BUT for those that have NEVER PLAYED A MONSTER HUNTER GAME, being put off by the complexity of the game but are curious to try, then this one is a SOFTER, introduction to the game world of Monster Hunter, albiet, just as difficult in parts,as its more serious siblings. So if you dont mind cheesey characters at times, and a story that is well Written ,with cut scences that are well made and enchanting,THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU,BUT if you like the more serious art work and vibes of the previous Monster hunter games, then WAIT until Monster Hunter world lands, Next year on the PS4. We are sold on this game. Have a great day and enjoy, what is a brilliant ,well done and enchanting RPG based on the Monster Hunter series. FOOTNOTE---Having finally clocked this game( still loads more to do) I stand by what i said before,This game may NOT APPEAL to the HARDCORE MH fan,but it definitely one of their better entries and an instant classic as far as we are concerned. Still playing it to this day,and a worthwhile addition To our ever growing 3ds collection. Look forward to MH WORLD on the PS4 as well, next year,BUT to us being Pokemon fans, anime fans and so forth, this is a hard game to beat. Also no glitches, frame rate drops or other problems, playing on two copies ,(they actually hired testers, unlike most devs these days). A VERY HIGH QUALITY PRODUCT,and awesome game. Have a great day.

"The best Pokemon game in a Decade."
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a Pokemon-esque game that borrows heavily from Monster Hunter gameplay and RPG elements. Add to that a new kind of rock-paper-scissors combat that you can actually predict mixed in with traditional turn-based combat and a very unique gene mechanic to change you monsters' abilities and you have a fantastic RPG. If that's not enough, it's clear that the game has some truly interesting story telling and characters.

"Worth it"

I was a little sceptical at first but after playing the demo I knew it was the kind of game I had been looking for! There definitely seem to be some steep difficulty changes as you progress through the storyline making you regret not grinding a wee bit more, but it’s seriously great for busting boredom! Some of the sub quests can be a little slow and irritating, but most games tend to have those when they are quite quest based.

Description

Monster Hunter Stories features a completely new gameplay different to the past titles in the series. The player assumes the role of a Rider who befriends monsters by stealing eggs and hatching them, you then have the ability to name them, ride them in the field, and have them join you in battle. The player will be able to explore different environments, encounter monsters in the field, battle them, collect items and steal eggs from monsters’ nests.

The battles now have an RPG turn-based combat system and during the player’s turn, both the rider and your companion monster will get to attack the enemy. Attacks for both the player and the enemy come in three categories: Power, Speed, and Technique. Each category is stronger against one in particular, similar to Rock-paper-scissors, Power will win against Technique, Speed will win against Power, and Technique will win against Speed. In this game, the player only has a choice of four weapons to use in battle, those being the Great Sword, the Sword & Shield, the Hammer, and the Hunting Horn. The player will have access to different skills depending on the weapon and equipment he uses, and he will also be able to use items in battle
