A worthwhile flick that explores the vampire legend, it has a cool soundtrack (by Tangerine Dream – very similar to Firestarter), and some good acting from very familiar faces. While it is still a B-movie, it is directed with skill and flair, and there's enough gore and action to keep the pace running swiftly from start to finish. Bill Paxton makes a great nasty dude, and Adrian Pasdar's performance is very human and un-heroic, which is refreshing! If you're into vampires, check this one out! Although made the same year as “The Lost Boys”, this one is not in the same pop-horror box at all.
…pray for daylight.
In the dusty heart of the American southwest, innocent country boy Caleb Collon (Adrian Pasdar of MYSTERIOUS WAYS) is seduced by a beautiful girl (Jenny Wright) into joining a roving pack of vicious drifters led by the enigmatic Jesse (Lance Henriksen of THE TERMINATOR and ALIENS). But this is no ordinary band of outlaws; Caleb is now trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows, hellish mayhem that thrives on blood and absolute horror that begins NEAR DARK. Bill Paxton (TWISTER) and Jenette Goldstein (ALIENS) co-star in this extraordinary shocker co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (POINT BREAK) that Entertainment Weekly calls "ultra-stylish, ultra-violent and altogether brilliant." This is more than simply the most ferociously original vampire movie of our generation: NEAR DARK is one of the best horror movies of all time.
