Excerpt from Oberlin Thursday Lectures, Addresses and Essays Many of my pupils have asked that I would publish a small book containing such oi my lectures as were con nected with some of the more interesting experiences of my life. This volume is an attempt to comply, in part, with the wish so expressed. Most of these papers had their place in an institution knowntto all Oberlin students as the Thursday Lectfiy'ei'fi'rfiwd ar'e occasional addresses and for the privilege of reprinting'two others in this col lect'ion, I am indebted to the courtesy of Messrs. Hough ton, Miffiin and Company and the Bibliotheca Sacra Company. The obligation is specially acknowledged in the proper place. The lectures are not printed in the order in which they were delivered, but in the chrono logical order of the events described in them. In this way they become, in a measure and indirectly, auto biographical, which my pupils have expressed a desire that they should be. Some of these lectures were deliv ered as long ago as the early eighties, which will explain the occasional incompleteness in the account of men and events. It has been thought best to leave the lectures substantially as they were presented at the time. This book is dedicated to my pupils as a memorial of the.
