Could have been completely cliched, and completely wasn't – nice job! Totally awesome movie! The CGI is so brilliant you don't notice it, and I love the way the character back-stories so vividly influence the forward motion of events. The Jaegars are soooo cooool! And with such a brilliant array of acting talent, you couldn't really go wrong. Can't wait for the sequel!
But boy what an amazing action adventure. Terrible acting, but it's easy to look past due to the awesome special effects and full on action story, a goodie to add to your sci-fi/ action library.
Guillermo de Toro and Travis Beacham have given us a good gritty film as we would expect, with a few good laughs (at Ron Perlmans expense mostly) without the cheese involved in say the 1998 Godzilla. Most of this type of film leave you rolling your eyes at some point where they totally part from reality (sorry, but you can't just upload a virus to the alien mother ship guys) that takes you out of the story, but this didn't do that.
Sure there's plenty of far fetched stuff in Pacific Rim, but they've taken the time and care to make sure it cells properly. The unfeasible is made feasible by giving us the right info to explaining – but not in that condescending CSI spell it all out way
Most importantly, I watched the whole thing through without feeling the need to get up and make another cup of tea… the best indicator of an engaging film.
Pacific Rim
Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster film on DVD, directed by Guillermo del Toro.
When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end.
To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.
On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
