Description

Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is an innovative novel in that it aims to use historical characters that promote Christian discipleship. After the death of the Apostles, church leadership fell to such men like Polycarp. His example in life and death has been preserved up to this day to bring glory to our One True God. Polycarp lived in a godless, pagan time, perhaps a bit prophetic toward how our culture is trending. Although the Church was threatened by being misunderstood, it thrived under adversity. This novel is vital in a day when hatred and violence are all around, compounded by apathy, laziness, along with a lack of self-discipline and biblical study. Each chapter will draw you into the reality of Polycarp's life, and before you know it, you are living the Christian life with him. It's a story that brings history to life and reminds you how real and human these godly leaders were. How they faced the same inner battles we do, and how they were strengthened by the same Word and same Christ that we have. It is an easy read with an engaging story yet it doesn't skim over the difficult or awkward spiritual questions we encounter on a daily basis. Ultimately, you'll discover that the true struggle for the Christian is not against sin but is more in the struggle to advance in godly obedience. Most novels are entertaining in that they carry you along by the emotions and imagination. Although they are certainly enjoyable to read, it is a bit discouraging that, when you are done with them, you are left with the feeling of having catered to yourself rather than having grown in any way. This book is an edifying novel, for you learn along with the main character rather than merely being an observer of him and the different events in his life. You are carried along by a desire to learn, not merely a desire to be entertained.

Author Biography:

Rick was reared in pastor's home in Cincinnati, Ohio. His life has been surrounded by the blessings and hardships of the ministry where he observed from the life of his parents and other church leaders the importance of godly virtue and being a trustworthy leader. His observations of right and wrong responses from those around him set Rick on a course that involved coaching and aiding leaders in both ministry and secular work. Rick has over thirty years of ministry experience, underscored with a focus on personal training and discipleship. He graduated from Northland Baptist Bible College in 1985 (now Northland International University). He has served as a youth pastor, youth leader for an international ministry, church planter, biblical counselor, and currently serves as a co-pastor of Grace Bible Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. To support the many ministry endeavors he has pursued, he started a marketing firm which eventually led to the forming of Proven Resources, Inc., a leadership and management consulting firm. Rick coaches leaders from start-up companies to divisions in Fortune 500 companies such as Pacific Gas & Electric. He has written numerous growth/development and motivational resources for various religious organizations and businesses. Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is a discipleship guide that has been woven into a novel. It provides the reader with positive instruction and guides the lessons along a captivating story of a true hero of faith. Henline Productions has made a feature film based on the last few chapters of the novel. The movie is to be released in early 2015. When Rick is not working, you'll find him either reading a book or roasting coffee (or both). As a coffee aficionado, he loves experimenting with various types of roasts, blends and enjoys drinking and selling his roasts. He anticipates starting a small-batch roaster with one of his nephews sometime in 2015.
