At the same time, it would seem a somewhat hazardous procedure to employ continuous gauze drainage in the brain awaiting the passage of a deep seated foreign body toward the surface. Just how much time must elapse before this is accomplished I do not know, but in the meantime the danger of meningitis would not be remote. I should think that it would be very much safer to attempt to remove the foreign body at once with a magnet or even to leave it entirely alone than to establish continuous drainage from the surface to the deeper structures of the brain.
