Description

Excerpt from Progressive Medicine, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Digest of Advances, Discoveries, and Improvements in the Medical and Surgical Sciences; March, 1905 In those cases of basic fracture with or without compression, but point ing to a fatal termination, Rawling suggests a novel method of treat ment which is based upon sound reasoning. Death in these cases is due to increased intracranial tension acting most forcibly on the nuclei in the region of the fourth ventricle; the amount of fluid in the cerebellar fossa is almost always much increased even when there is no obvious compressing agent, such as hemorrhage, foreign body, etc. An attempt should be made to relieve pressure by practising craniectomy in the cerebral fossa on the opposite side if the injury is inflicted in the ante rior part of the head, and on the affected side if the blow was delivered in the occipital region.
