A study which demonstrates how in fieldwork the unconscious mind often shapes the interaction between researcher, subject and setting. The author rejects the traditional view that the fieldworker is a rational, emotionless outsider, unaffected by the field setting. She emphasizes the fieldworker's own personal stake and involvement in the research setting. Using the tenets of Freudian psychoanalysis, Hunt demonstrates how understanding the psychic makeup of the fieldworker and of the subject can help improve the researcher's performance in the field.
