"80's gaming nirvana"
5 stars"

Having enjoyed all of the coin-op arcade games detailed in this book back in the day, I really enjoyed the nostalgic, and at the same time futuristic themes in this book. A nail biting and grand adventure. Looking forward to the movie!

"Nostalgia porn"
1 stars"

The book is pretty blatantly pandering to the 80's teen demograpic to the point where several times in the first 100 pages the author just straight up lists aspects of 80's teen and sci-fi pop culture…

“the Willy Wonka of this story liked authors such as J.R.R Tolkien, C.S Lewis, Orson Scott Card… Etc”

…which sucks because the whole story is built on these pop culture references, as the characters are just lazy archetypes and the plot is the same tired “magical boy” formula we've seen thousands of times

Now if you want a book that just makes you reminisce about the 80's, fine this book is perfect for you, but if you are after an engaging story, read something from one of the aforementioned authors

"So 'nostalgic' it becomes infuriating"
2 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

This book goes on and on and on about 80s pop culture, to the point where it feels like it's just a collection of facts and trivia. Found myself skimming whole pages. The writing is flat, the romance is unnecessary and riddled with cliches and the only really great thing about this is the world-building (though there are so many interesting aspects of it that aren't really explored which is a bit disappointing). I regret buying this instead of just borrowing it from the library.

A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready? It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality- OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation. For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late twentieth century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle. Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed. _______________ Readers can't get enough of Ready Player One . . . ***** 'This is an exciting story, especially for geeks, and the key word is FUN.' ***** 'Ladies and gentlemen, from this day this book is my life and I will obsess over it constantly.' ***** 'I just kinda wanna cry right now.
