Description

Excerpt from Remarks Upon the History of the Life of Reginald Pole Whilf'c they, who are of a different Com munion will never be brought Over by weak and fallacious arguments; they are not to be impofed upon by fpecious gloffes, nor borne down by dogmatical affertions, or the pre tended antiquity of Doe'trines which contain the groifef't abfurdities, and fly in the face of common fenfe. They cannot help indeed being Odended at the bitter acrimony with which the Reformation is traduced, and they rnuf't be exafperated at the extreme prejudice which blackens the charaeter of every Refor mer, and at the blind partiality which draws every oppofer Of it as an Angel of Light. But with whatever indignation every fincere Proteitant may refent this treatment of his Religion and its Friends, yet no one will be difpleafed at having the Tenets of the Church of Rome fet forth by its own members; for the fubjeets in difpute being thus afcertained, the objeetions againf't them may be produced with greater certainty, and matters brought to a fpeedy conclufion.
