Description

Four generations of women collaborated on this book project which features a collection of typewritten memories that have sat unpublished on a shelf for nearly three decades. At long last, family members (and anyone who loves tales of the American experience) can enjoy Mable Elizabeth Gates' original manuscript, which has been lovingly combined with family photos and illustrations.Remembering Lela & Charlie takes readers on a journey back to simpler times in 20th century rural Mississippi before microwave ovens and the internet, when country doctors made house calls, and a plate of home-baked biscuits awaited any hungry visitor. Mrs. Gates' evocative narrative from the life and times of her parents, Lela & Charlie Myrick, reveals both difficult periods and times of great joy and reminds us of what's most important-family and community.

Author Biography:

Mable Elizabeth Gates was born and raised in Mississippi; The fifth of Lela & Charlie Myrick's seven children. She and her husband, Duncan, have a grown son named Tony. Mable loves to write, garden, cook/bake, and serve the community through her church. Lela Rast Hartsaw is an author, speaker, and historic preservationist who was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. As Mable Gates' great-niece, Lela was proud to help publish the stories of her namesake, Lela Myrick. Lela and Mike Hartsaw have two school-aged children, Emily (the book's illustrator) and David.
