China's rise today is one of the most consequential geopolitical events in the 21st century. Studying and understanding China has become strategically important for many countries. China itself is also attempting to influence the overseas studies of China by establishing Confucius Institutes, giving out scholarships, inviting scholars to have a study tour in China, and engaging in academic collaboration. This book analyses the state of Chinese Studies in Southeast Asia. It looks at the history and current status of the study of China, analyses the characteristics of Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and what factors shaped the development and prospects of Chinese Studies in these countries. The book discovers and explores common factors such as the presence of ethnic Chinese communities, and historical and current interactions between China and Southeast Asia, and the diverse intellectual influences in the region. A novel insight into the study of China in Southeast Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of China-Southeast Asia relations, the intellectual history of Southeast Asia, and the intellectual history of Chinese Studies in the world.
