The four tracks and two videos on ROCK BOTTOM RISER, an EP from Bill Callahan, aka Smog, include some of the artist's most beautiful work. The first two tracks, "Rock Bottom Riser" and "I Feel Like the Mother of the World," are taken from 2005's acclaimed A RIVER AIN'T TOO MUCH TO LOVE, and are also represented by the two videos. The other songs, "Bowery" and "Fool's Lament," are previously unreleased.

On all these songs, Callahan's smokey vocals wend their way over delicate guitar work and sparse instrumentation. His lyrical delivery, on "Bowery" in particular, provides a counterpoint to the simple sonic atmospheres that, in addition to guitar and bass, include only drums and an occasional fiddle or bells. Of the videos, the simultaneously surreal and old-fashioned "Rock Bottom Riser" is a standout. It consists of animated watercolor paintings constantly rearranging and erasing themselves, morphing along to the dragging rhythms of the lovely dirge.
