It is helpful to have played race for the galaxy but not essential. the are many features to mitigate the random elements. Tiles are double sided, some dice can be changed from what you roll and you can discard additional tiles to draw again. Hidden role selection is the other key element of the game but an educated guess is possible. More players have little impact on time as actions are resolved simultaneously. I always play more than once when playing.
Rules confusing at first but once you understand is a great game, has opportunity for multiple expansions!
