Asian elephants are not as big as their African relatives and they also have much smaller ears. There are two hump-like “bumps” on their heads.
Elephants cool themselves down by flapping their ears. The Asian elephants, however, do not need to have ears as big as their related species, because they mainly travel in the cool twilight or at night. Only the elephant bulls have tusks, which can weigh an impressive 50 kilograms. They use them to dig for water and salt, remove the bark from trees, and to defend themselves. Just as there are left and right-handed humans, elephants also prefer to use either the left or the right tusk.
