"Complex, Fun, Highly Replayable!!"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

There was a long booklet of instructions that one should read thoroughly if they are playing for the first time, but it gets easier to teach the more you play it. The concepts are unique and the game mechanics are fresh and exciting. So many ways to win, it's fun to have a different strategy every time to adapt to your faction's strengths.

"Worth the money and great fun with mates!"
4 stars"

In terms rules and play, Scythe is like the game Go. Easy to learn but the real challenge is in the strategies. It is not a game to have on your person, as it is best played with a group of people. It is a good game to play after a long time away from your friends and family. I found the set up to take a wee while, but that day I was tired. I have not played with humans yet, but the single player mode is good, it is not really a tutorial as most single player modes are. It can be used as a tutorial, but it is good as simulation of a proper game. I recommend getting a group of mates to play this game and also to get the expansion Invaders from Afar, as that adds two more playable factions and brings to maximum players to 7. To conclude, I reckon it is well worth the coin.

Description

Scythe is an engine-building, asymmetric, competitive board game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valour.

In Scythe, each player represents a fallen leader attempting to restore their honor and lead their faction to power in Eastern Europa. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate powerful mechs.

Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict, there is no player elimination, nor can units be killed or destroyed.

Every part of Scythe has an aspect of engine-building to it. Players can upgrade actions to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance character abilities, deploy mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. These engine-building aspects create a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their engine adds to the unique feel of each game, even when playing one faction multiple times.
