Description

Collins Big Cat is a guided reading series for ages 4--7 edited by Cliff Moon. Top children's authors and illustrators have created fiction and non-fiction books that your children will love to read, banded to help you choose the right book for every child. Practical teaching notes are included at the back of each book. A boy and his mother go for a walk along the seashore and find all sorts of shapes. There's a starfish shaped like a star, a pebble that's an oval and a jellyfish that's a circle. A combination of fascinating photos and delightful artwork show children the variety of shapes that can be found on the seashore. The left hand page of each spread shows an illustration, with the child and his mother finding, for example, a starfish or jellyfish, while the right hand page shows a clear, detailed photo of the creature or item they find. A geometric shape below each illustration emphasises the shape of each thing found. A two page spread at the end of the book brings together all the items the boy and his mother have found, and shows how they used them to decorate a sandcastle. Red A (Band 2A) books offer predictable text with familiar objects and actions, combined with simple development of a story or recount.

Author Biography:

Frances grew up with three younger brothers. She kept them in order by telling them stories and writing plays for them to perform (but they never turned up for rehearsals). Now she has two children of her own to boss around, called Marianne and George. They give her lots of ideas for books. Frances thinks that the best time to mull over ideas is when you are doing something completely different - like sleeping. She suggests you don't try this at school, though, as your teacher might not agree. Ali Teo was born in East Malaysia. She grew up in Wainuiomata and attended Wellington Polytechnic where she earned a Bachelor Degree in Design. She works as a freelance illustrator.
