Shepherds And Butchers
South Africa, 1987. When Leon, a prison guard, commits an inexplicable violent act, the outcome of the trial – and the court's sentence – seems a foregone conclusion. A passionate opponent of the death penalty, hotshot lawyer John Weber discovers that young Leon worked on death row in the nation's most infamous prison, under traumatic conditions: befriending the inmates over the years while having to assist their execution.
Critic Reviews:
- " Coogan, known as a comic actor, does solid dramatic work and Garion Dowds' accused is living in a palpable living hell. He knows no one can be a shepherd and a butcher and stay sane. " – Anne Brodie
- " The performances are solid, including Coogan and especially Garion Dowds as the laconic and mournful defendant. Director Oliver Schmitz gives the film a measured pace, stoking tension as the courtroom drama unfolds. " – Bruce DeMara
- " Watching Shepherds and Butchers is a harrowing experience that would sway you if you don't already have any firm opinion about capital punishment. " – Theresa Smith
