"Will not run on AMD processor, but a great game."
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Will not run on AMD processor, not sure if any other processors have the same problem. But previous experience of Alpha Centauri allows me to recommend this game to lovers of turn based strategy games. Like all Sid Meir games this is better than most of the competition for the time it was created. I remember being impressed by the graphics the first time I played it, better than Civ2, not as advanced as Civ3. It also uses many features from other games (like goodie huts) and adds new ones like the way you design, construct and upgrade the ships (which can be time consuming) The goodie huts can give you a big advantage, giving Techs, units or cash. Like Civilization 1 – 4, Colonization (original and Civ 4), Railroad Tycoon 1 & 2 this game is capable of long hours of game play that really fly past. A truly great game.

Will not run on AMD processor. Not sure if it is the processor or Windows 7 but I have been unable to get the programme to run. It installs fine and the Menu comes up but when play is selected the screen goes blank and it shuts down.

*****Make sure you check your system before buying this******

"Absorbing gameplay"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I used to have a demo version of this many years ago which I loved, but now having the complete game I am enjoying it even more! Endless combinations of philosophies and resources mean this game is infinately re-playable and there is so much depth to the technologies that each faction develops you'll always discover something new.

"An ageless game"
5 stars"

Truly one of the greatest Turn-based strategy-games of the modern age of gaming, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is the pinnacle of Science-fiction games, one of the most engrossing and all-encompassing story-lines to have been published. Not only does one square off against rivals, the last factions of a scorched earth, remnants of a now-ancient war, vying for the precious land on Earth's last hope, Alpha Centauri, but Alien Lifeforms begin to fit back, protecting their native planet. At the same time, the endless population of the ‘working classes’, Drones, seek some form of comfort in life, allowing a player to be anything from a beneficent ruler, caring for the masses, to a brutal dictator, putting down riots with military force. All units have the ability to be upgraded, from turning a lowly unit-transport in to a heavily-armoured dropship, to making a fully-defensive infantry-man, armed with Tachyon cannons and a silksteel armour-carapace. Research follows many paths, some only being unlocked when certain, seemingly unrelated, paths of research have been taken. A must for any Strategy-lover, indeed, any Sci-Fi lover, and a great introduction to turn-based strategy for anyone.

"A timeless classic "
5 stars"

The plant you send your ship to in the space victory of the CIV series . Now you get to finish the story so to speak. That was the reason I purchased this game bit then it turn out I liked it more than CIV 2 because it had all the fun of CIV 2 plus customizable units and the multi-player was hours of fun. I seem to have lost a week to it without noticing . Despite the older graphics they take nothing away form what has got to be one of my all time favorite games.

"Good then, still good now" Purchased on Mighty Ape

Loved (SMAC) Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri years ago without the expansion pack of “Alien Crossfire”… still loving it. A detailed long game where you have many difficulty settings and the ability to create differing scenarios making it very re-playable.

Similar to Civilization, but in space… where the nationalities are now termed ‘factions’ it is a turn based, resource creating and gathering, economy managing, technology researching game where conflict is almost inevitable, but can be resolved via stealth, diplomacy or combat. The expansion pack adds a little twist, but I have'nt explored it enough to comment much, however… “it does'nt hurt”. Aliens crash land – and seem to be the original owners of this planet ! Buy and enjoy, multiple times !

"Woth the risk in trying this legacy game."
5 stars"

Have Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and the expansion Alien Crossfire (original discs). With all patches in Alpha Centauri runs on Win 7 64 bit but have not yet got Crossfire to run. As with all legacy games there is a bit od a risk but this is a game well wort the risk esp. As current special price is only $10.

"Simple yet complicated"
4 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

I first played this game quite a few years ago as a demo on my Auntie's OLD desktop. Turn based games are not normally my thing, although this seemed different. The graphics and gameplay were typical turn based quality (not very good), but they were enough to get the point across. The demo only had one possible mission, limited to 150 turns, yet was enough to get me interested. I may have spent all 150 turns trying not to get eliminated, but it was fun none the less.

Fastforward a few years and operating systems, and I come across my old friend on good-old Mighty ape. Purchase, install, and I start playing with more than 150 turns to look forward to. The gameplay is typical of most turn-based games – only as exciting and fast pased as you make it. There are 6 teams to play as, and all the maps are pretty much the same – you land on the planet, annoy the native inhabitants, make a few allies and wipe the floor with everyone else, typically ending with me nuking all the other players. Its highly illegal in the game, but what are they going to do about it- There are missions that start you off in various scenarios, but its all pretty much the same.

The thing that I like about the gameplay is that it can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it. On the surface, you make units, allies, enemies and do alot of killing in bad graphics. As you dive deeper into the game, there are alot of things, however, that you can change. Units are nearly completly customisable as you see fit, each base and its population can be customised and you can even change you teams social and economic model. Bases need to be fed, minerals extracted and units suported.

Or you can just make that part automatic and kill everyone. The choice is up to you.

"Timeless turn-based classic"

An absolute classic. Any lover of Civilization will love this game. Note: Its based on the Civ 2 engine so its graphics are very dated, but its gameplay are unsurpassed.

Works perfectly fine on my Windows 7 system. Didnt have to install any patches or workarounds or do anything. Just install and go.

"As good as ever"

This is a great game that has lasted for years. Updated for use with Vista, it also works without any issue using Windows 7 x64. Graphics are a bit dated and the interface is a little clunky, but still gives as much enjoyment as it did when first published. Unfortunately, there is no way of adjusting the graphics resolution to account for updated hardware, but, at least it works and can give even more enjoyment.

"Still LOve this game!"
5 stars"

I first started playing this game not long after it came out I can still play it today and not get bored. The amount of detail put into this game and the many different options you can choose makes this a game you can keep replaying. Gaia and Morgan are my faves! If you like strategy games then this is definately one for you! I actually might rebuy it just for the alien crossfire addon which I didnt get when I first bought it.
