For centuries, raising pigeons and doves was a symbol of status and privilege granted to the aristocracy. There used to be over 40,000 dovecotes in France, but now only 1000 remain. Topaz depicts these buildings in enigmatic b/w photographs and presents the first known documentation of this cultural legacy. With its careful telling details and subtle play of light captured by the camera, Silent Nests presents a unique, sophisticated and haunting visual experience.
A co-founder and board member of the international presenting organization, PhotoAlliance, Topaz currently resides in San Francisco, CA, where she also is a member and auction donor to San Francisco Camerawork, San Francisco, CA. Doreen Schmid, a writer, editor and curator who lives in Napa, California, is a partner in Subject Matters, a traveling exhibition service for socially conscious art. She has edited various photographic and architectural monographs and her writing has appeared in arts, culinary culture and lifestyle publications. She is a board member of PhotoAlliance.
