Description

Born and raised in a quiet country town in New Zealand, Edmund Hillary was a shy, unassuming schoolboy with an unremarkable career seemingly ahead of him. As a young man he discovered a love of mountaineering; it was a hobby that turned him into a legend of the twentieth century. Over sixty years after his memorable ascent of Everest, this book tells the full story of Sir Edmund Hillary's extraordinary life, from his expeditions to remote corners of the world to his humanitarian activities serving the Sherpa people. Drawing on Hillary's personal archives, it is an intimate but inspiring portrait of a revered yet modest man who lived life to the full - surviving personal tragedies as well as achieving historic triumphs, earning worldwide fame and displaying tireless philanthropy. Ranging from the roof of the world to the frozen extremes of the South Pole, Sir Edmund Hillary- An Extraordinary Life is a fitting and revealing tribute to a great man. 'Ed Hillary loved this book and so do we.' Peter Hillary, Sarah Hillary

Author Biography:

Alexa Johnston isa freelance writer and art curator. Her first book, a definitive biography of the iconic New Zealand mountaineer, Sir Edmund Hillary: An Extraordinary Life, was a finalist in the Montana Book Awards. An enthusiastic and accomplished baker from a young age, Alexa has published three cookbooks celebrating New Zealand's culinary history: Ladies, a Plate (2008), A Second Helping (2009) and What's For Pudding? (2011); as well as a beautiful hardback collectors' edition of her baking recipes, Ladies, a Plate: The Collection (2012). For her latest book, Ladies, a Plate: Jams and Preserves, Alexa turns her attention to a once-essential branch of domestic cookery and makes a convincing case for bringing it back to the centre of our kitchen activities.
