To be fair, Solo isn't Rogue One. That's a tough act to follow for the second stand alone Star Wars film. But it also isn't The Last Jedi, and I get a feeling that one of the reasons Solo became the second worst performing Star Wars film at the booking office (beating only the deservedly panned Clone Wars animated film) was a fan backlash against TLJ. That and the fact that apparently there's a thing called fan fatigue and five months between Star Wars films was not enough for people to get hyped up again. (I call BS on that, I could easily handle a new Star Wars movie every six-eight weeks for the next 40 or 50 years I reckon, but that's what they're saying – whoever ‘they’ are.) So put aside what the naysayers say. (Apparently a naysayer isn't just a horse. Say it to yourself. Yes, you're allowed to smile.) This is a great film. Sure, the start drags a bit but you eventually get over that. Young Han is not Original Han, although there are a couple of moments where you can almost see him in there. But he's still a pretty good Han nonetheless, and Young Lando may well have out-Landoed Original Lando with a stellar performance. The first ‘woke’ bot in the Star Wars universe, Lando's non-human semi-love interest L3–37, was the worst part of the film for me but seeing Chewie and Han in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon for the first time still brings a lump to my throat on the seventh viewing (mind you, Han's death in TFA is still bringing tears after more than ten viewings so maybe I'm just soppy). This is a great addition to the Star Wars universe and if you call yourself a fan, you owe it to yourself to watch it. It's not Rogue One, it's not Empire Strikes Back, but it is almost Star Wars: the Western and it's worth seeing.

Other than watching at night as some of the early scenes are quite dark and hard to see in daylight viewing. It is as good as Rogue One and better than some of the others.

With the emerging demand of hyperfuel and other resources, Han Solo finds himself in the middle of a heist alongside other criminals, where they meet the likes of Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian in an adventurous situation exposing the criminal underworld.

Critic Reviews For Solo: A Star Wars Story

  • “Luckily, just as tempers were starting to flare, Solo: A Star Wars Story has arrived to save the day.” – Anthony Lane , New Yorker
  • “Of all the Star Wars-themed movies, this one is the closest to a Saturday afternoon serial/western. Don't expect more than that.” – Peter Rainer , Christian Science Monitor
  • “Solo is at its best when it's uncoupled from all that heavy lifting, just crammed in a cockpit with its likeable cast and shooting for the stars.” – Philip De Semlyen, Time Out
  • “At its best, Solo captures the origins of that unique mix of characteristics, portraying the young Han Solo as a man trying to find his voice and his identity and having to fit himself into the mold of outlaw smuggler.” – James Kendrick , Q Network Film Desk
