Description

Dear Reader: This book is not meant to aggrandize-nor denigrate-Math; it is intended to provide an examination, a searching, as it were, of the subject and of the position Math fills in our worldly journey. Concerning Math in US schools, a "You're not doing it right!" red flag is certainly flying unrestrained. Some say our youngsters' decline in science and mathematical skills is tied to their dependence upon calculators, computers, the internet, cell phones, etc. That is, it is easier, and faster, to let the electronic tools... do the thinking. This claim is countered by the fact that students in other countries, e.g., China and Finland (plus more than 20 others with access to the same tools), are actually improving and continuing to surpass US students in such skills.
