Starlink had a rough start as the Toys To Life genre of gaming has died out the past couple of years. I think Ubisoft spent the past few years refining the Toys To Life (T2L) genre by actually adding meaning to the toys. In a typical T2L game, you simply place the toy on or near the controller/stand and the character just appears on screen. Boring and useless.
In Starlink, you get to build a spaceship on your controller with all of the parts being assembled on screen. Think of it like a simplified lego system. The building blocks of the starship are Pilot, Starship Base, wings, & weapons. You can assemble up to 6 wings (3 on each side of the ship connected together), 2 weapons, 1 pilot, and 1 base. There are a huge amount of combinations.
I really enjoy snapping on different weapons for different scenarios. The building of the ship can be done in real time (no pause menus required). So while flying, you can rip off a weapon and slap on a new one. Its a very clever system. Also, the wings & weapons have orientation. So you can put a weapon on backwards and shoot behind you (for those pesky raiders chasing you).
I feel this is by far the best T2L game. Unfortunately, the market spoke and said the toys were just too expensive or maybe Ubisoft decided they didn't make enough profit. As of now, the toy line has been discontinued. The switch box set is a rare find as the switch version is the most popular (because it has STAR FOX).
Its hard to recommend buying into the toy line at this point. However, the toys are all under heavy discount, so its still a very fun game especially if the T2L interest you. If your not a T2L fan, then going digital is also a great option. Its a fantastic game regardless if you choose the toy route or not.
