It cannot too strongly be emphasized that the diagnosis epilepsy is justifiable only when all other diseases which are capable of inducing epileptiform attacks, particularly hysteria and psychasthenia, either positively can be excluded or recognized as associated conditions. For it is quite common to encounter patients in whom hysteria or psychasthenia have been superimposed upon an epileptic foundation, just as multiple sclerosis usually is complicated by hysteria.
