Description

They are your neighbours across the back fence. They are someone you work with. They are a best friend's grandparent. They are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. They are super ordinary heroes in Alberta. -- From the Introduction by T.J. Georgi. In Super Ordinary Heroes, journalists T. J. Georgi and Lisa Wojna turn the spotlight on a group of dedicated, selfless Albertans who in ways great and small have helped make this world a better place. Not all of their names are well known, but their stories are universal. The tales in Super Ordinary Heroes run the gamut from exciting to heart-wrenching: Read about the Olympic diver who risked life and limb to save a pregnant woman after her car plunged into the Bow River. Learn of the men who risked it all to help a forest ranger after an attack by a black bear in the wilds of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Follow the dramatic saga of a woman's race against time to find a new kidney and the donor who saved her life. Trek through the rugged mountains of Nepal with a university professor intent on taking light into the darkness. Visit with a group of courageous children living under the cloud of the world's worst nuclear disaster. Read of one man's heroic battle to survive after saving his wife and children from a burning building. And take a lesson from a cancer-stricken woman who spent the last days of her life pleading with Alberta's teens to stop smoking.
