"A film based on Vera Britain's life and loss in WW1."

Purchased on Mighty Ape

This is a very well acted, thought provoking movie. Vera Brittain became a successful writer and this film portrays her at the start of her studies at Oxford, her families struggle and sacrifice when war starts and Vera's incredible work as a nurse after losing her brother, her fiance and friend all in a short space of time. The director captures the heart of Vera's determination and spirit beautifully in this adaption and the story leaves you appalled at the waste of young lives, the tragedy of war, the effects on families, as well as the hope and the rebuilding that follows. Vera Britain campaigned for peace for the rest of her life and remains a inspirational woman who wanted to make a difference and write from a women's viewpoint.

Description

Testament of Youth is a searing story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Brittain which became the classic testimony of that war.

Vera – irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded – overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown to win a scholarship to Oxford. With everything to live for, she falls in love with Roland Leighton as they go to pursue their literary dreams.
However, the spectre of war looms over them as Roland leaves for the front to fight for King & Country, and Vera volunteers to become a wartime nurse.

Testament Of Youth Reviews

“[Vikander's] performance is a subtle tour de force of feeling and restraint, made all the more remarkable by the whiplash highs and lows of this true but melodramatic tale.” – Washington Post

“Vikander and Harington provide the spark this World War I epic needs to get us through the tribulations and tragedies that pile on with numbing regularity.” – Rolling Stone
