Other works are complete on their first publication, and then either disappear, or reappear In successive editions, as wanted, whether improved or unimproved, or at most they are serials appear ing in successive chapters or fragments, until complete, when they take their place with other finished productions. But periodicals are never finished, till they die of inanition: not from the completion Of their work, but from their inability further to prosecute it. Until they fail as' periodicals, they have inexhaustible vitality and fecundity. Each separate article, however great or small, may be complete in the number which contains it. It may fall dead, or quicken tens of thousands Of readers, only to be pushed out Of sight and memory by others which take its place and its prerogative. But the periodical which publishes it, is ever reappearing with fresh articles equally adapted to the wants Of each successive time Of pub lication. It is ever recurring, ever new, ever young, coming forth successively, to address to men words, thoughts, facts, intelligence, seasonable and appropriate to their ever-varying occasions, exigencies, and necessities.
