"Steampunk zombie sci-fi awesomeness"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

Fret not, this book is light on steampunk, moderate with the zombies and sci-fi and heavy with the awesome. I picked this up because a bunch of other people said its really good, and after reading it I have to say those other people were right. The only thing I don't like about it is that it ended.

"Incredible visualisation, zombies and toxic gas, brilliant."

Purchased on Mighty Ape

An alternative version of early america where steampunk rules. Things have gone badly wrong in Seattle thanks to a mad scientist. Zombie making toxic gas fills the air and creates toxic rain. Superbly written you can truly visualise the main characters, their gas masks and harsh view of life. The story rollicks along following two separate character paths always destined to intertwine at the conclusion but engaging none the less. Zombie blasting, air ships, mad scientists a great read for wet winter days.

Description

At the start of the Civil War, a Russian mining company commissions a great machine to pave the way from Seattle to Alaska and speed up the gold rush that is beating a path to the frozen north. Inventor Leviticus Blue creates the machine, but on its first test run it malfunctions, decimating Seattle's banking district and uncovering a vein of Blight Gas that turns everyone who breathes it into the living dead. Sixteen years later Briar, Blue's widow, lives in the poor neighborhood outside the wall that's been built around the uninhabitable city. Life is tough with a ruined reputation, but she and her teenage son Ezekiel are surviving - until Zeke impetuously decides that he must reclaim his father's name from the clutches of history.

Review

Starred Review. Maternal love faces formidable challenges in this stellar steampunk tale. In an alternate 1880s America, mad inventor Leviticus Blue is blamed for destroying Civil War–era Seattle. When Zeke Wilkes, Blue's son, goes into the walled wreck of a city to clear his father's name, Zeke's mother, Briar Wilkes, follows him in an airship, determined to rescue her son from the toxic gas that turns people into zombies (called rotters and described in gut-churning detail). When Briar learns that Seattle still has a mad inventor, Dr. Minnericht, who eerily resembles her dead husband, a simple rescue quickly turns into a thrilling race to save Zeke from the man who may be his father. Intelligent, exceptionally well written and showcasing a phenomenal strong female protagonist who embodies the complexities inherent in motherhood, this yarn is a must-read for the discerning steampunk fan.
