Newly-widowed, a woman attempts to realise her dream of opening a bookshop in a remote island location. However, the matriarch of the village has other plans and does her worst to thwart to young widow. An ally is found in a young girl and an elderly and lonely widower, with Bill Nighy in a star turn. This is a heart-warming story, with its funny and sad moments – well-told and excellently acted. A beautifully crafted gem of a film.

I really enjoyed this movie. Well worth watching…made me want to have a book shop of my very own even more than I already did

I'm drawn to Bill Nighy's work. Leading lady is superb. You won't be disappointed

Based on Penelope Fitzgerald's novel of the same name; ‘The Bookshop’ is set in 1959, Florence Green (Emily Mortimer), a free spirited widow, puts grief behind her and risks everything to open up a bookshop – the first such shop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough, England.

** Critics Reviews for The Bookshop **

  • “Its subversive undercurrent, embodied in fine performances by Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy, is what makes it really interesting.” – Jonathan Holland , Hollywood Reporter
  • “It's memorable for its subtle unconventionality – sad without being a weepy, touching without being a romance.” – Ed Potton, Times (UK)
  • " It is a strange, subdued, rather miserable film, interestingly perceptive on conformism and philistinism as a way of life, and on the disconcerting wiles the inhabitants use in order to thwart Florence's entirely reasonable plans." – Peter Bradshaw , Guardian
  • “Restrained, but never overly so, The Bookshop deserves plenty of custom.” – James Mottram , The List
