In the long run, however, they will all be found to fall under one or the other of two broadly contrasted modes of explanation which Lotze characterised in a well-known passage 3. On the one hand, attention has been depicted after the fashion of a varying power of illumination, a sort of waxing and waning light, which may be directed by the mind upon the several presentations it receives, and in accordance with the variations of which, other things remaining the same, will be the clearness, the precision, the complete ness in apprehension, of what is attended to.
