Description

Excerpt from The Carbonisation of Coal: A Scientific Review of the Formation, Composition and Destructive Distillation of Coal for Gas, Coke and by-Products The Cantor Lectures which I gave in the winter of 1911 at the Royal Society of Arts, on the Carbonisation of Coal, brought me so many letters of inquiry on various points connected with the subject that I thought it might be of interest to some at least of those engaged in carbonising work if I took the lectures as a basis for a short treatise on the subject, and I think the absence of any book dealing at all fully with the scientific side of carbonisation justifies the attempt. During the last forty years I have been interested in many fuel problems, and have had the good fortune during that period to assist at the birth of most of the new departures from the recognised rut of procedure, and also, I regret to say, have been a mourner at the funerals of many. I have attempted to treat my subject in such a way as to awaken interest in many new points without burdening the reader with too much scientific detail, and although many of my views will not, I fear, be acceptable to all my readers, they will be recognised as an earnest attempt to present several subj ects from a different point of view to that gener ally adopted.
