Description

Constructed from extensive research, on-the-ground reporting and exclusive interviews with hundreds of members of the British military, as well as the politicians who directed them, the allies who fought with them and the family members who loved - and on occasion - lost them, The Changing of the Guard is a bold and panoramic account of the British army and its role in recent wars. Moving from tours in Iraq to the deconstruction of Camp Bastion to the murder of Lee Rigby and beyond, it explores how the modern military works and why. It examines the relevance of the armed forces in peacetime Britain, in terms of their social, economic, political and cultural impact - and asks what they can offer to a new generation.

Author Biography:

Born in Cambridge, Simon Akam held a Gap Year Commission in the British Army before reading English Literature at Oxford University. He later won a Fulbright scholarship to study at Columbia Journalism School in New York. After graduation Simon worked at The New York Times and subsequently spent several years in West Africa as a correspondent for Reuters and the Economist. His writing and journalism have appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, the Economist, the Financial Times, the Independent, the New Statesman and Newsweek, among other publications.
