Illustrated in full colour throughout, an uplifting and unique look at chimps past and present. Explores what we can do to protect chimps of the future and help conserve this endlessly fascinating species, by evolutionary biologist and TV broadcaster, Dr Ben Garrod. How do you teach a chimpanzee to be wild? Does laughter come naturally to these animals? How much of your DNA is shared with a chimp? For over a decade, Dr Ben Garrod has studied chimpanzees and ways to protect and conserve them. We join Ben on a journey that has taken him around the world; with exclusive access to world-renowned primatologist Dr Jane Goodall, for whom he worked in Uganda, to SE Asia, the Caribbean and his most recent work in West Africa. To fully understand what it means to be a chimpanzee, Ben follows eastern chimps in the humid forests of Uganda as they cooperatively hunt other species and witnesses the incredible problem solving abilities needed for tool use in the critically endangered western chimps of Liberia. In his infectious, lighthearted, trademark style, Ben describes encounters with chimpanzees to highlight the different threats they face, from the illegal international pet trade, to bushmeat markets, and the effects of relentless habitat loss - not to mention how your new furniture, your toothpaste and even your mobile phone are all implicated in their falling numbers! Illustrated throughout in full colour, a brilliant story for all the family to share and enjoy.
