"If you are familiar with the book, this is the best adaptation."
5 stars"

If you prefer substance over special effects, and know the book well, then this is definitely far more enjoyable than the recent film. This adaptation was not dumbed down in any way and faithfully follows the book, and doesn't add anything out of place. The acting couldn't be better. The incidental music by Geoffrey Burgon is a perfect fit. Everything you would expect from a BBC production, except that given it's age the special effects might seem a little dated – although they are imaginative and have used the technology available at the time to good effect.

This breathtaking production of C.S.Lewis's powerful fantasy adventure for all ages uses live action, animation and stunning special effects to recreate the most exciting and enchanting story of all.Narnia is a magical world, a land of dwarves, nymphs and giants, a bewitched land where fauns carry umbrellas and brew tea, where animals talk and horses fly. It is the land of Aslan, the great lion who can warm the coldest heart. It is also the land of the Lion's arch enemy, the White Witch who ensures that in Narnia it is always winter but never Christmas.

It is a quiet day in the countryside when Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy stumble through the back of an old wardrobe into the enchanted land of Narnia. When the White Witch learns of their prescence, their lives are in danger, but there is talk that Aslan is on the move…Spring is in the air - but the White Witch tightens her grip and plans the destruction of the children and Aslan. Her triumph looks certain but the magnificent Aslan risks everything and calls on the Deeper Magic from Before the Dawn of Time.

This Alan Seymour dramatisation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was originally broadcast as a BBC series in 1988. Whether you take CS Lewis' unsubtle Christian symbolism on board or not, the fact remains that the cycle of Narnia novels, of which this was the first, are among the best children's fantasy stories of all time. For anyone who spent their formative years on Mars, the story concerns four children who find their way into a magical land benevolently ruled by the mystical lion, Aslan (voiced by Ronald Pickup, no less). Aslan has been deposed by the evil White Witch (played wonderfully by a screechingly camp Barbara Kellerman) who has cast all of Narnia into perpetual winter and whose eventual defeat entails a fearful sacrifice. While the special effects are firmly of the Doctor Who school, Lewis' writing is expertly transferred to the small screen and there are robust but credible performances from the four highly plausible young thesps cast in the leading roles. It's perfect for cosy family (early) evening viewing, and something that young viewers will return to again and again. --Roger Thomas
